GRAFTING

Updated: Apr 21

Blackout Art Society presents GRAFTING — a new original work exploring the immigrant experience through the lens of botanical metaphor. What does it mean to graft a new life onto unfamiliar roots? Can you ever truly belong to a soil that did not grow you?

GRAFTING is a bilingual Persian/English production directed by Artistic Director Amir Hosseini, drawing on personal testimonies from Vancouver's Iranian diaspora community to weave a theatrical meditation on belonging, loss, and the stubborn hope of putting down roots in a new country.

About the Production

GRAFTING asks what happens to the parts of yourself you cannot bring with you, and what new growth becomes possible when you do.

Blackout Art Society is Vancouver's leading theatre company for immigrant and refugee artists. Co-Founded in 2017 by Amir Hosseini, we have produced acclaimed works including THE FRONTLINERS, ENGLISH, and City of Tales.

In the spirit of storytelling, we pause to honour the ancient narratives of this land. We stand upon the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.

Just as we celebrate the diverse voices of immigrant and refugee artists, we recognize the First Peoples who have woven this place's first and enduring tales. Their stories are a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of community. As we come together from many corners of the world, may we always remember, respect, and learn from the stories that this land holds.
