About the event

Join us for an inspiring panel discussion featuring immigrant artists who have successfully navigated Canada's performing arts landscape. This candid conversation explored the challenges, triumphs, and lessons learned by artists who crossed borders to bring their stories to Canadian stages.

Panellists shared their personal journeys β€” from navigating language barriers and cultural differences, to building new networks and finding their artistic voice in a new country. This session was part of STAND Festival 2021, Blackout Art Society's annual celebration of immigrant and refugee artists.

STAND Festival is a platform dedicated to uplifting the voices of immigrant and refugee artists in Vancouver, BC. Each year the festival brings together performances, workshops, and professional development sessions designed to support newcomer artists in building sustainable careers.

In the spirit of storytelling, we pause to honour the ancient narratives of this land. We stand upon the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.

Just as we celebrate the diverse voices of immigrant and refugee artists, we recognize the First Peoples who have woven this place's first and enduring tales. Their stories are a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of community. As we come together from many corners of the world, may we always remember, respect, and learn from the stories that this land holds.
