About The STAND

When we first immigrated to Canada, we struggled a lot as immigrant artists from finding the right resources and grant opportunities to share our stories and voices with the community. This Festival directly benefits multiple communities and is the beginning of an innovative new partnership model between established and emerging theatre creators. It will create a shortcut for immigrant and refugee artists to become familiar with the art industry, connect to other artists, and move on to create their artwork.

The STAND festival (Strength Through Art Network Diversity) runs from Nov 01 -07 each year. This hybrid Festival takes place at the Presentation House Theatre venue in North Vancouver. STAND presents works by immigrant and refugee artists focusing on addressing social issues concerning race, class, and gender. This Festival is co-produced by Blackout Art Society and Presentation House Theatre.

The purpose of the STAND festival is trifold:

  • to create a platform for new immigrant and refugee artists to develop their ideas

  • to prepare these artists to be independent in their artistic path through mentorship and design knowledge-sharing workshops

  • to showcase their work to a broader public.
